Obituary of Charlene Vassar

Our mother Charlene Vassar left this earthly place in the morning hours of June 28, 2013. We know Dad was waiting for her with open arms. She was surrounded by her loving family praying that her journey home would finally rid her of her pain. Mom was born in Cleveland, Oklahoma on January 14, 1931, to Robert E. and Effie Faulkenberry Dennis. Mom joined her other sibling, Con, Leo, Neve, youngest sister Dorothy arrived in 1933. The Dennis family moved to Idaho and settled in the Wilder area. Mom went to school in Wilder and graduated in 1949. She attended Business School in Nampa. There was a handsome fellow that worked at her brother’s service station in Caldwell. Mom pulled in and just happened to catch his eye. The rest is history!! Gifford W. and Charlene were married September 1, 1949. Cindy Louise was born in 1952, followed by Cecil Williams in 1955. In 1956 Mom and Dad had the Vassar Hatchery on the corner of 10th and Linden, That is also where Vassar Milling was started. Mom was always the head bookkeeper for Vassar Farms, only slowing down the last couple of months. What strength and determination she had! Mom would always cook a big meal at lunch to feed Dad and whoever else happened to be hanging around or would just always show up for lunch, the more, the merrier! What a great cook she was! Mom belonged to the Zonta Club, bowled in league in Caldwell, made many lasting friendships that endured through the years. She also served on the board of Pet Haven for some years. Charlene loved to putter in her flower garden and vegetable garden and always had such a beautiful garden and was very proud of it! Mom made several trips with Dad to Las Vegas for the National Finals Rodeo. He was very involved in the Caldwell Night Rodeo. They always had such a great time and so many stories they would bring back! In 1975 they purchased a cabin in Donnelly. This was another fun place where lots of good memories were made. Dad passed away on August 21, 2007. Mom always had a soft spot in her heart for animals, didn’t matter if it was a dog, well really dogs. She always had 2 or 3 around her, guineas, cats, cows and their babies, chickens, donkey’s you name it. If it was 4 legged she loved it!! Even up to the end she was always asking if the animals had been taken care of. Mom was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Curly of 58 years, her brothers Con (Betty) and Leo (Vivian), sister Dorothy (Bill) and nephew Bobby Joe. Mom is survived by her daughter Cindy of Caldwell, son Cecil and his wife Molly of Caldwell, granddaughter Lisa of Caldwell, granddaughters Brook (Dan) and Erin of Seattle, Washington, step-granddaughter Jennifer and Nina, sister Neve and Joe Troxel, nephews and nieces Vernon and Kay Dennis, Bob and Judy Troxel, Judy and Jerry Ralls, Dennis Coats, and Claudia Loomis and many great nieces and nephews. Please make donations to Pet Haven or the Canyon County Animal Shelter. We would like to give a special thanks to Claudia Loomis and Judy Ralls for their love and care you provided to our Mom through this journey.
