Obituary of John J. Dahl

John “Jack” Julian Dahl, of Middleton, formerly of Pocatello, passed away on September 15, 2018 in Nampa, Idaho at the age of 81 from a prolonged illness.

Jack was born December 21, 1936 in Virginia, Minnesota to Julian and Elsie Dahl. When Jack was 12, the Dahl family moved to Orofino, where his father became foreman of the Clear water Tribune. Jack followed his father’s footsteps in the printing business working for the Clearwater Tribine and was the owner and sole operator of A-II-Z Printing.

In 1957 Jack married Janice McArthur. They had three children, Julie, Kathleen and Jarrell “Jay.”

Jack’s second marriage in 1973 was to Becky White Nunnelley. Becky had one son, Kevin, whom Jack adopted.

Together they have 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

All of his life, Jack was active in sports including; baseball, football, track, swimming, golf, and hunting. He was a member of the Idaho National Guard pistol team. He also loved to train hunting dogs as well as his little dog, Mitizi. He taught his grandchildren many of his athletic skills, and in his last few years, he loved to show everyone how Mitzi could play a piano and hike a football.

Jack liked to do yard work and wherever he has lived his yard was pristine. He also liked to fix things – nothing ever stayed broken or in ill repair when he was around. He was also very creative as could be seen in his home and business.

Music was always important to Jack and at any time of day, during any project, he would be singing or humming words to songs especially 50’s music and church hymns, would just spring forth. He was still singing in his hospital bed with his last breaths.

In 1982, Jack, Becky, and their sons moved to Pocatello after selling the printing business. Jack became a realtor for ReMax. He also spent many hours helping neighbors and friends with all kinds of projects simply because he liked to.

Jack became a faithful and active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in 1976, serving in many positions including six years at the student stakes at ISU and six years in the Branch Presidency at the Pocatello Women’s Correctional Institute. While in Middleton he worked with the Cub Scouts and did temple work for his ancestors.

Surviving Jack are his wife of 45 years, Becky; and children, Julie (Kenny) Anderson and son Joel of Garden City, Kathleen (Dave) Rosenkrautz and sons Nick and Noah Dotson of Boise, Jay (Dawn) Dahl and sons, Brennen, Courtney and Ashton of Rapid City South Dakota and daughter, Shelsee Scherbel of Caldwell, Kevin (Ellie) and children, Jessica of Boise, Benjamin, Eddy, Dakota, and Alyssa of Caldwell, as well as 11 great-grandchildren.

“Grandpa Jack” was loved and will be missed by his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and extended family and friends.
