Dear Lorraine and kids,
I first met Bob when we served on the Original Elmore County Planning and Zoning Board back in the 70's. He was the core of the committee as he was the only one who actually knew what GOOD planning might entail. We had some great times there in the old Court House regaling one another about hunting and fishing and other nonsense. Three ranchers; Hammett Postmaster's wife; a civil service engineer and Bob directing! We occasionally actually did some actual "planning and zoning" stuff. The three County Commissioners knew even less than we did, so whatever we came up with, they pretty much bought. We did one great thing.... The first developers up on Lester Creek Flat had huge plans for 400 plus lots up there and we headed them off at every turn. It is now a fine development of 40 acre parcels with water and power to each lot and it is an enhancement. Bob was responsible for the whole county and He had some great stories about certain characters who tried to circumvent health mandates. My favorite stories were about "Mary" who ran the Desert Inn. (carelessly) and how many time Bob caught her "out of compliance". And also Jimmy who ran the Manhattan Cafe. Jimmy couldn't speak English (at all) when he was caught with unclean conditions. Ha.
Any way....You had a great fella there and I will miss him. I know it will be harder for you all. His passing leaves a big empty that can't be filled. Regards, Tom Gill
